Cycle 1 Week 8 Midweek Minute

Good afternoon,

This week in Natural World, we have been taking a closer look at DNA and how cells divide. We saw actual DNA that we extracted from strawberries, learned about the structure of DNA and RNA, and tomorrow, students will be modeling the cell cycle.

In Personal World, 6th graders have begun exploring conflict resolution. 7th and 8th graders have been focusing on digital citizenship and this week we have discussed filter bubbles, echo chambers, and confirmation bias and how to avoid them online.

Important Dates and Reminders

Thursday, October 23rd — UN Day Rehearsal (11:00 AM)
This will be our dress rehearsal with the sound techs. Students who will be playing their own instruments should make sure to bring them to school.

We will have literature discussion on Thursday this week since Friday is UN Day; students should make sure to be prepared for the discussions.

Friday, October 24th — UN Day
We hope everyone is able to attend this special event. Please note that there will not be parking available in the lot or the surrounding streets for families. Please use the Walsh Street parking lot or the lot under Staples.

Arrival for students is at the usual time. The celebration is at 10:00 AM and dismissal is at 1:30 PM from the blacktop. The Peace Ambassador students will be joining the luncheon and all parents are also welcome to join.

Attire: We discussed attire in our class meeting yesterday. Our guests and staff will be dressed in business casual attire or dressier. Students should wear slacks or skirts/dresses (no jeans or sweatpants) and a collared shirt if possible (polos are OK). If a student must wear a t-shirt, it should be a plain shirt with no graphics or text. Shoes should be neat and clean without holes. 8th grade students have special roles and should be dressed as nicely as possible.

Tuesday, October 28th — Field Trip: Red Wiggler Farm
Please dress for the weather and pack a water bottle and non-microwave lunch.

Theme Tests

At our class meeting on Tuesday we discussed the upcoming theme tests with the students. We showed students sample tests and discussed the structure of the test. We also shared what supports students may bring to the test based on their grade level. Finally, returning students shared advice with the class about how to prepare for and take the tests. We have included the documents outlining these things below.
