NCI Update

Good evening, all.

We have had full days since arriving on Monday. After a brief orientation, the students played some group games. Then we had lunch followed by their first field group experience. Field groups are a student-led exploration time. Supervised by an NCI staff person, two groups chose how they wanted to spend their time. One group explored the property playing a game called “Camouflage”. The other group explored a cave and did some rock scrambling. After field groups, they had a one-hour break and then had dinner. After dinner the group tackled a series of team-work challenges called quests. Then we had a snack and story before heading to bed.

This morning, after breakfast, we went on a hike. Since we are on a ridge, it was a steep downhill which we then had to climb back up but we took it slow with plenty of breaks. After the hike it was time for lunch and then a game of Basin Ball, a team game through which they explored how water moves in watersheds. This was followed by fire building. The students were broken into three groups, taught the components necessary successfully build fire and then used that knowledge to build and light a fire. After some trial and error and creative problem solving, all of the fires were successfully lit.

At the conclusion of the fire-building activity, we had a one-hour break followed by dinner. The students are currently off on a night hike and will have a story and snack before heading to bed.
