Each October, students, teachers and parents participate in
our annual United Nations Day Festival, a
colorful event that celebrates the diversity of cultures in the world. Each
November and December, students participate in special classroom projects in
world religions supplemented by carefully planned field trips to local
religious institutions. Studies culminate in a Festival of Lights honoring
all the world's religions just before the holiday break. Each Spring we enjoy
Science Fair and Earth Day celebrations.
Director Andrew Kutt feels that celebrations such as the United Nations Day, Festival of Lights, and special visits from Ambassadors are extremely important because they are a visible, tangible, and fun way for students to come together to celebrate positive social values and spiritual principles common to all humanity. He says that it is essential for children to learn qualities such as tolerance, compassion, and moral courage, as well as cooperation, problem solving and non-violent conflict resolution if they are going to have the tools they need for transforming the world. "Most importantly," says
Mr. Kutt, "it is essential that young people learn that the solution to the
world's problems begins with them. They need to be empowered to feel that they can make a difference. And they need to discover, or recover, the feeling of wanting to make a difference."
The annual "Festival of Lights" celebration culminates over a month of study that has found Oneness-Family children engaged in learning about the spiritual practices of people all over the world.
In 2002, the children performed songs and dances, and shared prayers from many world religions. Children and their teachers went on field trip "pilgrimages" to a number of religious institutions and temples. The school's philosophy is that these experiences will empower the students to gain tolerance and understanding of people different from themselves. It is also our hope that parents and students will discuss their own values and spiritual beliefs, especially as children voice questions.
